The Jolly Roger Flag – History

The Jolly Roger is the name given to various flags flown by pirates to identify a ships crew as being pirates. The flag is usually identified by the skull and cross bones.

Typically, the Jolly Roger Flag is a black flag with white skull and cross bones. The design was actually used by several famous pirate captains including Edward England and John Taylor. Some Jolly Roger Flags also contain an hourglass which signified that the victim’s time was running out.

The jolly roger flag, also called pirate flags, were mostly used in the 17th and 18th century. The flag was used as a sign of intimidation to convince potential victims to surrender without a fight since it sent the message that the crew were outlaws or pirates who fought hard and didn’t obey rules.
